our founder:
rose previte
Rose Previte, 2018 RAMMY nominee and 2023 Winner for Restaurateur of the Year, is the founder of DC's award-winning restaurants Compass Rose and Maydan, comes from a food loving Sicilian-Lebanese family. Growing up, Rose spent years helping to run her mother's catering business and later her restaurant. She later spent over a decade working in bars and restaurants while getting a master's degree in Public Policy from George Mason University.
Rose married David Greene, NPR journalist, and joined him when he was posted in Russia. In almost three years’ time the couple traveled to 30 countries, absorbing their street and market foods, and the energy of diverse cultures. These travels reinforced her strong commitment to community, and to offering people the chance to taste delicious foods and discover the meaning behind them, which inspired the opening of Compass Rose in 2014.
Rose was bartending full time and took the travel thing pretty seriously before she moved to Russia The couple ended their globetrotting by taking the Trans Siberian Railway across Russia.
On the trip Rose conceived of what we all know today as Compass Rose. She came home and decided to open a bar. That bar became her first project and the very beginning of a movement.Rose launched her own wine brand, Go There Wines, and released her first cookbook, Maydan in late 2023.
Getting blissfully lost in crowded markets. Smelling fresh ingredients and wet concrete. Walking through streams of sunlight filtered through brightly colored canopies. Hearing familiar sounding words, yet completely unplaceable. Smiling and laughing—with everyone. Haggling over prices as you relish the still new feeling of foreign coins in your hand. Buying goods, and having great moments. Sharing stories, and living your story.

who we are
Compass Rose is one of seven restaurants located inside Maydan Market. You’ll find communal-like seating through out and can order from any of our partners. The market was born from a desire to build a global village that highlights the impressive culinary world of Los Angeles, creates community & helps to lower barriers to entry in the food and beverage industry. This new concept will be a home for small businesses to flourish, anchored by a live fire hearth, like its original namesake restaurant.
Maydan, a word with roots in many languages from Tangier to Tehran and Batumi to Beirut, signifies a gathering place that is often found in the heart of a city. Maydan Market isn’t one of a kind, but the first of its kind, and it belongs in LA. Every neighborhood and diaspora has a story to tell in Los Angeles - we invite you to gather, eat, drink, meet, and share memories with us soon.
